Obscene Cost for Canopy

Author: Colin Craig 2009/07/20

$175,000 price tag for "canopy" on Legislative Building's ramp almost as much as average home price in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) expressed outrage today after it learned the new small "canopy" over the Legislative Building's wheelchair ramp cost taxpayers $175,000.

"The price tag is obscene," said Manitoba director Colin Craig. "No one would question constructing a covering to protect the ramp's users, but surely something tasteful could have been designed, built and installed for a fraction of the cost."

Craig noted the canopy's price tag of $175,000 fell just shy of the average cost of a home in Winnipeg - $203,900.

"Considering the average price of a home in Winnipeg is $203,900, taxpayers really got fleeced on this one," added Craig.
